Can You Make Money Selling Avon?

I have had people ask me if you can really make money selling Avon?  I have known a few Avon ladies as well as people selling similar product lines, like Mary Kay, Melaleuca, etc.  The short answer is yes, but what you are really probably wondering especially if you have tried it is how.  That is the question I would like to answer and give you some tips on how to make you successful based on what I’ve seen work and people I know that are seeing the cash flow.

Learning How To Sell Is Essential To Making Money

You may know people that sell and Avon or other products and make absolutely zero dinero and probably a lot more that have spent a lot but didn’t make a dime of it back.  I’ll tell you one of the biggest reasons why this happens right off the bat has to do with the lack of true understanding on how to sell.  Most people selling these are trying to sell the product only and like a friend of mine end of driving all over to deliver orders, take orders or just to drop off catalogs.

I realized a couple of years ago that I needed to learn how to sell and wow, that was an eye opener that set me on a journey.  First of all it earned me a hiatal hernia because I learned selling air purifier / vacuum cleaner units.  They were large, heavy and required in home demonstrations that made me lift them in and out of my car.  But I learned from someone I knew had taught a friend of mine how to sell and I knew my friend is phenomenal at sales so the school of heavy lifting was worth it for me.

Top 3 Key Ingredients To Selling

1) Qualify your prospects properly – this part is critical, most people selling Avon are just trying to fill living rooms they really aren’t being picky.  If that’s your tactic you are counting on volume and you are going to be working like crazy.  It’s not that you won’t get sales from people that don’t fit the right profile but you will get better quality sales from people that do “qualify.”

Find out what makes the ideal repeat customer for the product you are selling.  Depending on the product you want to assess their level of desire to purchase your products, ability to pay and will you need a spouse present to ensure that they can decide right then.  This isn’t difficult and it doesn’t require extensive questioning.  For Avon you may simply ask questions like “do you currently wear make up, use body care products or enjoy giving yourself manicures or pedicures?”, “How much would you estimate that you spend monthly on [fill in whatever they said yes to from the first question]?” and “does your husband help you pick out colors?” OR “if I can show you how to pay less for your products or possibly get them for free would you be interested?”

2) Making the right impression – believe it or not this is important online and off!  Show up on time, show up dressed appropriately and either adequately educated or with sufficient information available to help your potentials make an informed decision.  This is where having someone that can come in and present for you the first few times is essential.  I was fortunate enough that my mentor did three presentations for me before I went out on my own but I still managed to mess up the first and last key ingredients multiple times so I didn’t make any sales until I got out on my own.

3) Making sure the prospect is in a position to make a decision – this step is critical, I can’t express enough how important this is to your success.  Many sales people suffer from either inadequate permission or the person’s ability to use their spouses absence as an excuse not to make a decision.  Make sure they understand up front when you are making the appointment if their spouse needs to be present, find creative ways or reasons to get them there if you are having problems.  You might be shocked how many times the women are more resistant to the sale but there might be a sample of something their husband loves and you are in or it could be the wife depending on your product.

First don’t aim to just sell the product, aim to grow your business which means finding other people that will sell the product and find more people to build their own business.  Start with networking groups, even if you can only attend once a month.  Don’t worry about trying to sell to the masses, find the people that are social and connected.  Become the connector, if you are more concerned about selling your product you will limit yourself to those you are personally able to connect with.  If you aim to help others build their business so you connect them to people they can sell or otherwise benefit from then they will help you build your business.

If you are looking for a great side profession or even a full time one making extra money with a cosmetology license is a very flexible way to do it. If you are already a cosmetologist or would just like to know how to hit the ground running I’m going to give you some strategies that I learned and watched my friends learn. Plus I’m going to give you some extra tips on how to put social media to work building your business.

I used to have a license to help work my way through college and it was the best job I could have had because the hours were flexible so I could work around my class schedule and on top of the minimum wage I got paid I made lots of tips so I always had cash in my pocket.  Hairstylists working for somebody else will probably earn minimum wage but your tips should more than make up for it.  With only haircuts, completing roughly 3 per hour is acceptable depending on your clientele and that can add another $5 to $15 dollars per hour that you would have in cash.  Of course you are required to pay income taxes on your tips.

Getting Your Cosmetology License

There are lots of schools now that you can go to, I would suggest comparing pricing, the kits that they give you and the instructors experience. If you get a bunch of instructors that never worked in the real world, never had a business or did any haircuts outside of a cosmetology school it’s a problem. I personally went through a school program that paid for my training so the kit I received wasn’t as complete as the people that paid for themselves. Oh and look around for how clean the place looks and see if they are treating it like a salon. The closer you can get to the real experience the better.

There is financing, but I’m not sure about financial aid. Every state has different requirements for total hours and how many haircuts, colors and perms they want you to do in order to graduate but just know that isn’t the end of the road. You will still need to pass a state exam where you need to show up in person with somebody willing to let you demonstrate your knowledge on them. Then there is a written test as well. Just stay calm, practice, read up on the rules and regulations and if something goes wrong.

Making More Money Starting Out As A Cosmetologist

First of all when you are in school you can start to build your business and practice these techniques so when you leave you will already have built up a clientele. I know it sounds corny but you need to keep customer records. You will want to record their name, address, phone and email. Of course you are going to gather details about their hair, get to know them details and preferences.

You don’t need to wait to start practicing your customer relationship building skills so make sure that you are setting up ways to remind your customers it’s time for a haircut or color or perm. If your school has postcards you can send, fill them out yourself. If they have cards you can fill your name in and make sure all of your customers get one.

When you start out I don’t suggest going it on your own there is still a lot to learn and having somebody that can give you advice, fix or prevent mistakes and provide advanced training will be beneficial. I know some people knock Supercuts but they do offer more training and better ways to do haircuts that will make you use your time more efficiently.

Spend some time working on each area, working for or with people not because it’s such a great place to have a job but because there is something great to learn. Maybe you can find a place where they rock and doing color or perms. If you find one that has a professional look and understand how to manage their clientele work for them and learn.

Once you have your license you will want business cards that have your name, business phone number, cell number, Facebook and Twitter profiles. When you give your customers the best chance of getting in contact with you your business will increase and you will have a chance to earn some extra money during hours you otherwise wouldn’t be working. All of the tips I am giving you will allow you to maintain your relationship with your clients and change jobs without offending anyone, you never know when you might need a referral or your old job back.

Just some general rules to keep in mind when doing this, always be respectful to the place where you are working. Most shops don’t like for you to take their customers and some don’t like you working other jobs. Plus you don’t want to compete with yourself by charging less outside the business than you would if you were at work. Making sure that you are keeping the relationship going online will mean that if you decide to move on or rent your own booth the transition can be smooth and you won’t lose all the hard work you put in.

When leaving somewhere take the time to tell your customers that you are leaving and who they might consider as the next person to cut their hair if they decide to keep coming to that shop. You won’t need to pressure them to do anything if you have already established a good relationship because they will find you on Facebook or read where you are now located on Twitter. Plus they already have your cell phone number so when they need to touch up their color they can just call you.

Tips To Make Extra Money

The best way to make extra money is to increase the perceived value of your services. That is to say that you aren’t doing more work necessarily but working in a way that makes customers place a higher value on your services in comparison to any alternatives. The first of these is your appearance, your customers will feel better about themselves when they can refer their friends to people that look like they have it together.

Make sure you are fine tuning your skills in color and styling because they have a higher perceived value than haircuts and even perms, although I’ve heard perms are returning. Going to hair shows will help keep you up to date on the latest trends and give you ideas on how to implement simple changes that will make your customer feel extra special.

Never let your customer leave empty handed when walking out the door, recommending hair products is an easy way to help them solve their hair problems and put some extra money in your pocket. Even if they don’t purchase shampoo you still need to fill their hand, put a coupon there, some free samples or the picture from the magazine. Their full hand will subconsciously tell them you have filled their need.

Some Final Words of Wisdom

Work on your speed, you don’t have to sacrifice quality it just means you learn how to do your job better or how to keep working while you carry on a great conversation. This is why I liked Supercuts because even though I was already pretty fast they taught me how to get my haircuts done faster, check them better and work more efficiently.

Don’t balk at companies that want you to meet a quota, take that as a challenge that will prepare you for your own business (booth rental or owning a salon). If you are managing your clientele you will not be dependent on walk ins to keep busy.  Learn how to stack your clients so that you can get a haircut done while a perm or color is processing.

Don’t leave out clients just because you are afraid, practice, if it’s clipper cuts you are leaving a lot of money on the table. Think about it, if you could have the wife’s color processing while you cut the husband’s hair and at least one of their children just in time to wash out the color style her and get them out the door.

Dress like the clients you want, if you want trendy clients you better be trendy yourself. People are attracted to what they like so if you aren’t seeing the kind of people you would like or maybe they just aren’t tipping the way you would like try taking a look in the mirror and changing things up! But above all else, have fun!
